The Construction Foundation hosts a number of events across the province that provide opportunities for job seekers to obtain hands on experience when searching to find what jobs they are best suited for.

TRADES GATEWAYS

Trades Gateways provide in-person skill and knowledge development activities for employment seekers who have little experience in the skilled trades. Find out more about our upcoming gateways below and register to attend the next session!

Carpenters construct, erect, install, maintain, and repair structures and components of structures made of wood, steel, and other materials. They also read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements.

Carpenters are in demand across the province are recognized as a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program.

What you can expect at a Carpentry Gateway workshop:

  • learn about career opportunities in carpentry
  • develop tool usage and literacy skills
  • learn how to operate power tools and swing a hammer with ease!
  • all skills and basic knowledge will be developed will creating a project to take home
  • have fun and learn entry level skills that will give you a good understanding of careers in carpentry!

Electricians plan, design, assemble, install, alter, repair, inspect, verify, commission, connect, operate, maintain and decommission electrical systems. Electrical systems provide heating, lighting, power, alarm, security, communication and control in residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, transportation, marine and entertainment environments.

Electricians are in demand and are recognized as a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program.

What you can expect at an Electrical Gateway workshop:

  • learn about career opportunities in the electrical trades
  • develop tool usage and literacy
  • learn how to install receptacles and switches
  • gain an introduction to basic code
  • learn how to splice wires
  • have fun and learn entry level skills that will give you a good understanding of careers in electrical!

Roofers work on residential, industrial, and commercial buildings using a variety of materials such as asphalt, wood shingles, roofing tiles and metal materials and tools to build and repair roofs.

The roofing trade is a nationally designated trade under the Inter-provincial Red Seal program and has future earning potential of over $40 per hour.

What you can expect at a Roofing Gateway workshop:

  • learn about the roofing industry and the job opportunities available
  • get hands-on experience installing both sloped and flat roofing applications
  • gain the skills required to be able to install a basic shed, or gable style roof on your own
  • gain a good understanding of flat roofing practice
  • have a fun and rewarding experience which will give you some valuable skills!

New sheet metal apprentices are in demand. From ventilation systems to metal roofs and siding, sheet metal trades provide stable work. Sheet Metal has grown in popularity over the past decade creating many new jobs for skilled trades people. In fact, Architectural Sheet Metal has become so specialized that a new apprenticeship was developed in BC to meet the needs and demand of the industry.

What you can expect at a Sheet Metal Gateway workshop:

  • learn about the sheet metal trades and the job opportunities available
  • create your own aluminum carry-all, using pop rivets
  • develop tool usage and literacy that can be applied to work in the trade
  • have fun and learn entry level skills that will give you a good understanding of what it means to work in the Sheet Metal trade!
